Step 1
Be prepared to pay an adoption fee. If the fee is reasonable, don't balk at it. Keep in mind that most websites warn against "free" pets. As they say, unfortunately, "a free pet is a disposable pet." Otherwise, tell the owner that you will make a donation to the local animal shelter if you don't want to pay the adoption fee. You can bring the receipt on the day you will pick up your pet.
-
Step 2
Contact the owner. Find out more information about the dog, including his medical background, house training, etcetera.
-
Step 3
Schedule a meeting with the dog. Pictures show how the dog look. Meeting the dog will show whether or not there will be chemistry between you and dog.
-
Step 4
Meet with the dog, especially if you have little children or a pet. Watch them interact. See how they get along before you adopt the dog. If all goes well...
-
Step 5
Schedule the pick-up date. Preferably a week after the initial meeting. It will give you time to prepare your home for the newest addition. At the same time, it gives the dog owner and the dog a chance to say goodbye.
-
Step 6
E-mail the dog's owner with a final checklist of the items included with the dog's adoption. Ask that they confirm by e-mail.
-
Step 7
Pay the adoption fee on the day of pick-up.
-
Step 8
Congratulate yourself for a well-planned adoption! Now enjoy spending time with your new friend.
