1
Apply leather conditioner. Using a soft, lint-free cloth, apply a small amount of conditioner, and work it into the leather in a circular motion. Be careful not to get too much, as a little bit goes a long way. Wipe off the excess conditioner, and repeat until the entire surface has been treated. Apply leather conditioner to your jacket when it is new, and then several more times a year. Leather conditioners and creams can be found at stores that sells leather goods. Don't use any oils that come from animal sources, such as mink oil, as this will darken the leather.

2
Protect your jacket from the elements. Moisture will harm leather, causing ugly stains and stiffness. If your jacket gets wet, hang it in a dry place, and allow it to air-dry naturally. Don't be tempted to speed the drying process with a hair dryer or radiator---this could damage the leather. Do not expose your jacket to direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Treat stains quickly. Use a soft brush to remove as much of the spilled substance as possible. Next, gently wipe the jacket with a damp cloth and mild soap, then wipe again with a fresh, damp cloth or sponge to remove any soap residue. Hang the jacket and allow it to air-dry, then apply conditioner to the spot.

Take your leather jacket to a professional cleaner periodically. Professional leather cleaners have special equipment and chemicals that can improve the appearance of even the oldest leather jackets. A professional cleaner can condition the leather, fix any tears, and make your jacket look like new.

Store your leather jacket in a dry closet, protected from extreme temperatures. Use a padded hanger that is the appropriate size for your jacket, and place it in a porous garment bag. Do not store your jacket in a plastic bag, because the leather needs to breathe in order to stay in top condition.
