It is an unfortunate reality that while we are in the workplace, we are exposed to a number of threats to our personal safety. These threats can be reduced; the key to a safer workplace is creating and implementing effective safety and security measures. Additionally, these policies need to be communicated to all employees, not just the designated security personnel. Consider these tips for actions to increase workplace safety.

  1. Step 1

    Have office visitor policies that require them to wear identification or to be escorted while on the property.

  2. Step 2

    Create an emergency alert procedure for employees to alert coworkers or security if an emergency arises.

  3. Step 3

    Have one designated area for outside delivery persons and make it clear that deliveries will occur at that location only.

  4. Step 4

    Make sure that all alarm code information, keys, company information (including personal and business checks), and crucial equipment (wireless phones and notebook computers) are secured, even during working hours.

  5. Step 5

    Report suspicious activity immediately, instead of waiting for criminal activity to occur.

  6. Step 6

    If entering the workplace outside of regular business hours, make sure that the doors to the facility are locked form the outside, and that they are latched securely.
