Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Ethernet Cable
- Linksys Wireless router
-
Step 1
Disconnect from all networks on your computer.(An easy way to disconnect from a wireless network is to disable the wireless adapter on your computer)
-
Step 2
Power on your wireless router, by plugging it in.
-
Step 3
Connect one end of the ethernet cable into the ethernet port of your computer. Connect the other end into one of the four numbered ethernet ports. Be careful not to use the port that's reserved for the internet connection. If you look at the front of the router, you should see 1,2,3, and 4. The indicator for one of these should be lit. If not, the ethernet cable is not properly connected or you have used the port reserved for the internet connection on your router.
-
Step 4
On your computer, open up your web browser. In the address bar, enter "192.168.1.1" then press 'enter'. If prompted, enter a username and password. If a username and password haven't been previously set up, use either of the default accounts below:
1. Leave the username textbox blank and enter 'admin' as the password.
2. Enter 'admin' as the username and enter 'admin' as the password. -
Step 5
On the "Basic Setup" page, select "Automatic Configuration -DHCP" from the first drop down menu. Below, make sure that "DHCP Server" is enabled.
-
Step 6
Click the 'Wireless' tab at the top of the page.
"Wireless Network Mode" should be set to 'Mixed'.
Enter a name of your choice for the "Wireless Network Name(SSID)". This is the name that identifies your wireless.
"Wireless SSID Broadcast" should be enabled. -
Step 7
Click the tab "Wireless Security".
"Security Mode" should be set to "WPA Personal". This is the most secure encryption for a home wireless network, since WEP can easily be hacked.
"WPA algorithms" should be set to 'TKIP'.
"WPA Shared Key" is the password for your wireless network. Enter a password of your choice that is at least 8 characters in length.
Click "Save Settings" at the bottom. -
Step 8
Disconnect the ethernet cable from both the computer and the router. Make sure that the indicator for wireless is lit on the face of the wireless router.
-
Step 9
On your computer, re-enable your wireless adapter. Search for your wireless network and connect to it. When prompted, select WPA Personal as the encryption. Enter the same password that was entered for WPA Shared Key.
