Get your children in the right hands

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Evidence
  • paper work
  • references
  • anything to support your case
  1. Step 1

If you are going through a divorce or seperating from your partner and their are children involved; chances are the custody issue will come up. Dont let this scare you. Even if you do not have the funds to get a lawyer their are other options.

  2. Step 2

In every city, there is a place called Legal Aid. You will need to go there and talk with a lawyer or attorney. Bring all required paperwork with you such as assets, evidence of why there was a divorce, anything that could help your case. This will make things go a lot faster. Have references of people that can vouch for you, bring someone along if possible that can speak along with you. It's ok to be nervous. Take note cards with you so you don't forget to say anything. Always shake hands before and after and look them in the eye always. After the first appointment make sure you know whats going to happen next. Maybe there will be another appointment to come back or maybe the lawyer will need to contact some references but make sure you know what will happen next. The key is; be very persistant. DONT GIVE UP. This is what they want you to do. Call and show up every week. Always keep the ball rolling. These people are here to help you at low or no cost. And if they tell you that there is a waiting list, don't that that discourage you. So many people book appointments with these lawyers and don't go through with them because things change with their spouses. A lot of people give up as well. So many appointments get no shows that they would rather have someone else fill it immediately than to have a complete lose. Continue to call and better yet, walk in every week. Make it known that they know your face. Persistence is the key to making this happen.

  3. Step 3

Continue to call and better yet, walk in every week. Make it known that they know your face. Persistence is the key to making this happen. Just remember, just because you do not have the funds for a lawyer does not mean you are wrong and you wont get custody. Be determined and persistent and it'll pay off in the end. Good Luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be respectful. Shake hands. Good first impressions will help you.
  • Unless absolutely true, don't talk so negatively about the other party. Don't make it seem that you are better than them. You're not there to down the other party but to speak well of yourself and how your children will benefit by living with you.
