How to Password Protect Folders in VISTA thumbnail
Protect your Windows Vista folders from other users.

You cannot actually password protect your file folders in Windows Vista. You can, however, encrypt each folder which will, in turn, achieve the same desired effect: block people you don't want seeing your folders from seeing your folders.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the folder you want to encrypt. Click the "Start" menu and click "Computer." Find the folder on your hard drive but do not open it.

    • 2

Right-click on the folder's icon. Select the "General" tab and then "Advanced."

    • 3

Place a check in the check box next to "Encrypt contents to secure data."

    • 4

Backup your encryption certificate and key onto a CD or memory stick. You cannot open your encrypted folders without it.
