January is National Mentoring Month. This is a wonderful time to start the New Year off right by helping a child in need. "In the US between 400,000 and 600,000 each year go into foster care and about 150,000 of those never return to home." There is nothing more rewarding than helping those in need.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Big Brother Big Sister

    Big Brother Big Sister

Big Brothers/Sisters - Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children from ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. You can simply check them out online and fill out an application or visit your local chamber of commerce to see where they are located in your area. This organization needs more men to help volunteer. You will be assigned to a child and you mentor these kids by playing games, playing ball, take them to the movies, and lunch amongst other fun things. Be a Big Brother or Sister today.

  2. Step 2
    Homeless Shelters

    Homeless Shelters

Children's Homeless Shelters - Check out your community to see if they have homeless shelters for children. A lot of them do throughout the country and these places need your help. Volunteer at a shelter and do homework with a child, cook dinner for the house, go food shopping, and plan some fun events with the director. These places are also looking for help with pay! Look in your local directories for numbers and see what you find out.

  3. Step 3
    Reading

    Reading

Local Schools - Your local schools are always looking for mentors and volunteers for children in need. Visit your local public schools to see how you can help. Some need help in reading, math, and other areas within education. Recapture your childhood and help a child in need within the school system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check your phonebook and Chamber of Commerce for a listing of shelters.
  • Visit your American Red Cross or Helping Hand for more information.
  • Visit a women shelter for abused women and children.
  • Try your local hospital for the Pediatrics Department or Cancer center for children.
