Chef knives can be purchased for $5 all the way up to $200 per knife. So for some people, these kitchen utensils are investments. When you dull a chef knife, you lose the edge and cutting can be sloppy and difficult. Using a dull knife is also a safety hazard. More serious cuts are experienced when a knife blade is dull. A knife is most often dulled by improper storage, so keep in mind how you store your knife each time you use it.

Things You'll Need:

  • Knife protector
  • Knife block
  • Hanging knife holder
  1. Step 1

Consider keeping your chef knife in a wooden knife block. If you store your knife in a kitchen drawer, the edge may dull when the blade hits against other utensils you have stored inside the drawer.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a plastic knife sleeve if you need to keep your knife in a drawer. This will protect the sharp edge of your knife from other damaging kitchen utensils stored in the drawer.

  3. Step 3

Install a hanging magnetic knife holder that can be installed on your kitchen wall. Knifes are stored on the magnetic strip so edges are kept free from bumping to other kitchen utensils.

  4. Step 4

Do use your chef knife for any other reason but to cut food. Never use your knife on tin foil or to open packaging. This will dull its edge.
