Step 2
Place an ad on Craigslist, in your local newspaper, or college paper for free furniture. Just say that you would like help furnishing your apartment, and can pick up the items for free. People will respond to these ads. Sometimes they will give you enough to almost completely furnish your apartment.

Step 3
Ask your friends and family for furniture that they do not wish to keep. You will be surprised at the people who want to get rid of the couch in the basement or the old chair in the living room. In this situation, sometimes you can even get it delivered for free.

Step 4
If you own a pickup truck, cruise the apartment complexes in your area. People leave old furniture sitting out beside dumpsters all the time that is perfectly good. Either they are pressed for time or do not wish to take the furniture to the Salvation Army, but in either case, it will be sitting outside waiting for you to pick it up.

Step 5
Attend garage sales very late in the afternoon or call after the garage sale is over. You may be able to score some free furniture this way. Explain that you can pick up any free items that they may wish to give away.
