This is a good, quick pass play for short-yardage situations. Three receivers go out, but it's the flanker who's the target.

  1. Step 1

Set the offense in a split-back formation. Place seven players on the line. Position from the quarterback's left: split end, a space of 5 yards, tackle, guard, center, guard, tackle, tight end. Two running backs stand ready a yard behind the quarterback , one slightly to either side. Finally, a flanker is set 5 yards to the right of the tight end and 1 yard off the line of scrimmage.

  2. Step 2

    Hike the ball.

  3. Step 3

Instruct the tackles, guards and center to block straight on, keeping their mirrors engaged and repelled.

  4. Step 4

Instruct both running backs to step forward to help protect the quarterback.

  5. Step 5

Have the split end either sprint straight out past the left corner or cut 45 degrees right and possibly draw chase from the corner or left linebacker.

  6. Step 6

Send the tight end racing 3 yards past the line of scrimmage, then cutting to the outside.

  7. Step 7

Send the flanker angling 45 degrees inside.

  8. Step 8

Have the quarterback take the hike, step backward once, then fire at the flanker.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the moves quick. This is not a "wait for the open man" situation. This is hot potato. Get yardage; hike and throw.
  • Follow these steps assuming your line faces a basic 5-2 defense (five players on the line of scrimmage, two linebackers behind, a corner on either end, and two safeties in back). Adjust the blocking slightly to counter varying defenses.
  • The quarterback should watch where the strong safety and right linebacker are positioned. Avoid having them step in for an interception.
  • Football is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
