Sink More Putts: #1 - Selecting the Putter

Selecting a good putter can help you sink more putts and lower your golf score. Follow the steps below to help you select a good putter.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the golf equipment store. Golf equipment can be expensive. Look for stores that sell new equipment at discounted prices. Compare prices to make sure you are getting a discount! You want to purchase good equipment to help you sink more putts.

  2. Step 2

Utilize the practice section in the golf equipment store (if they have one) to try different putters. A putting stroke is not a full out swing!!! If you are not clear as to how to putt, ask someone in the store. Hitting a ball at full swing in the store could cause serious damage and injury!

  3. Step 3

Select different putters "to try" while in the store that appeal to your eye. This means based on the look of it, you feel you will be able to use it successfully to help you sink more putts on the golf course.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you feel comfortable with the length of your putter. Try long and short putters. Which ones do you feel most comfortable holding?

  5. Step 5

Try both mallet or regular blade putter heads.

  6. Step 6

Utilize the alignment marks as you practice your putting stroke in the putting section of the store. Alignment marks are clearly marked on the top of the putter. Good alignment marks help you to line up your putter as you prepare to hit the ball to sink more putts.

  7. Step 7

Try putters with these tips in mind. Consider purchasing the one that feels the most comfortable as you practice with it. Again, practice "a little" in the putting section of the store before you purchase.

  8. Step 8

Find out if there is a return policy and how it works. Return policies depend on the individual stores. Adhere to the return policy in case you need to return the putter. You will not be able to return a putter; if you do not adhere to their return policy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you purchase your putter, practice as often as possible.
  • Look into purchasing gear that allows you to practice in your basement.
  • If the gear is too expensive, practice in your basement anyway. Pick a spot in your basement and try to roll the ball over that spot or as close to it as possible.
  • If your basement is not carpeted; you may need to purchase a carpet remnant that will allow you to practice. A carpet is more like grass than a concrete floor.
  • Have fun!
