How to Password Protect Microsoft Internet Explorer

Want absolute control over who uses Internet Explorer to access the Internet? Learn how to lock and password protect Internet Explorer quickly and easily. Make sure no one else can access the Internet through IE without your permission.

      Log in to an administrator account. Close Internet Explorer, if running. To password protect Internet Explorer, you must make sure it isn't running. If you're unsure of the program's status, open Windows Task Manager by pressing the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys simultaneously to view all programs running.

      Navigate to the "Start" menu and right-click on the "Internet Explorer" icon. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. The Internet Explorer Properties dialog appears.

      Click the "Security" tab.

      Highlight the user name or group that you wish to deny access to Internet Explorer and click the "Edit" button. If the user name doesn't appear, add it by clicking "Edit," clicking "Add," entering the user name and clicking "OK" in the Select Users or Groups dialog. You should now be able to add or deny access to the program for the selected user by clicking options in the bottom white text box.

      Edit the options for each user or user group you wish to deny access. Click "Apply" after editing for each user. When finished, click "OK." Next, click "OK" on the Internet Explorer Properties dialog to approve changes. You have locked the program down and users must now access your user account by password to access the program. After logging in to your user account, you won't have to supply the password to access the program.

      To verify that you actually did password protect Internet Explorer, try opening the program. Do this by logging out of your user account and log in as the user you have locked out of Internet Explorer. If you cannot open Internet Explorer, you have succeeded in locking password protecting the user account.

  • To modify your Security settings, you must log in to an administrator account,

  • If you want to restrict access to another browser on your computer, such as Firefox, you must password protect the other browser, as well. The procedure is the same as password protecting Internet Explorer.
