Dog parks can be a great way to socialize and exercise your dog. But some dogs may need to be introduced to the dog park slowly because they are either aggressive or shy. You should consult a professional if you have concerns about your dog's behavior and how to introduce him to a dog park. Here are some tips for your dog that you may be able to use when you take him for the first time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog
  • Dog park
  • Leash or long lead
  • Dog toys
  • Muzzle (Optional)
  • Dog trainer (Optional)
  1. Step 1

Make sure your dog is vaccinated and licensed before taking him to the dog park. He should be reliable enough to come to you when called most of the time.

  2. Step 2

If you are uncertain of your dog's behavior, take him to the dog park when it is empty. Let him run around and play. Let him get a feel for the dog park.

  3. Step 3

Ask another owner if you can introduce your dog to their dog. If your dog or the other dog seems aggressive, take your dog away. Walk him until he calms down and try again.

  4. Step 4

After watching "The Dog Whisperer" I picked up some ideas on how to deal with aggression. I took my dog to the dog park and as soon as he showed aggression I made him sit and then lay down. I wouldn't let him get up again until he was submissive and calm. I had to do this several times but it worked and he had a great time in the park. If you are not sure you can physically do this safely, consult a dog trainer or have someone come along with you to help that has experience with dogs.

  5. Step 5

If you do make your dog lay down, make sure you don't get hurt in the process. My dog didn't bite me but he thrashed and showed his teeth for a few minutes. I know my dog's temperament and felt comfortable doing this. Make sure you are confident that both you and your dog won't get hurt when attempting this.

  6. Step 6

Walk your dog for a half hour before you take him to the dog park. If he is high energy, he will be much calmer and well behaved after a brisk walk.

  7. Step 7

Consider using a long lead or rope when you first introduce your dog to the dog park. When other dogs are around, let your dog play and explore. If he shows aggression, pull him back and calm him by making him sit and lay down for a few minutes.

  8. Step 8

Consider putting a muzzle on your dog for his first time in the park if you are not sure he will bite.

  9. Step 9

Give your dog a toy or tennis ball to distract him while he runs around the dog park. It distracts him from the other dogs and can deter him from biting.

  10. Step 10

After 10-30 minutes on the lead, let your dog run around with the other dogs. Do this as long as you feel confident that he and other dogs will be safe.

  11. Step 11

Some dogs may appear aggressive when in fact they are playing. Be sure you can tell the difference between the two so you can avoid a dog fight.

  12. Step 12

Dog fights will happen but not often. And it usually only takes one dog to start it. Be sure your dog isn't that dog. If your dog gets involved in a fight, distract the dogs with a loud noise or splash water on them. Don't physically put yourself in harms way.

  13. Step 13

Only you can judge whether or not a dog park is a good place for you and your dog. If your dog is timid or aggressive, seek the help of a professional dog trainer. Only use these tips if you are confident that both you, your dog, and other owners and dogs will be safe.
