Step 1
Start with making a comprehensive grocery list at home. Plan out what meals you will eat every day of the week, so there are no temptations to purchase expensive convenience food.
-
Step 2
Look in your newspaper for Walmart's ads and at ALL major grocery store sale pages. Walmart will honor competitor's ads, so make sure your check ALL grocery store ads. Also look in your newspaper and online for coupons for those items. You may want to alter your grocery list and decide what to cook based on what is currently on sale. You will want to mark your grocery list with the price of the competitor's sale item to see if Walmart's price is cheaper and so you can keep the competitor's sale item separate from the other items during your shopping trip for easier checkout.
-
Step 3
Bring the coupons and competitor's ads to your shopping trip at Walmart. I like to put a hand held shopping basket on the bottom of my large basket to put the competitor's sale items in for easier checkout. Make sure you check to see if the competitor's sale item is actually cheaper than Walmart's price and store brand prices because it is often not.
-
Step 4
When checking out, simply go to the normal check out lane as usual. Let the checker scan all of your normal items, but keep the competitor's ad items separate until the end. Tell her that you would like to have the competitor's sale items price matched and she can do that without manager approval. She will need to see the sale page to make sure the item matches and that the sale date is still valid.
-
Step 5
Walmart does not honor: buy one/get one offers, competitor's coupons, double/triple coupons, ads that are out of date, or competitor's ads from places like dollar stores or Big Lots. All Walmarts are different, so they may have different policies at different stores. The price matching usually only works with grocery items.
