Butterfly Cake Decorated with Home-made Vanilla Buttercream Icing

If you are looking for a DELICIOUS vanilla flavored buttercream icing suitable for frosting or decorating a cake, just follow this recipe for success!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 16 ounces of powdered sugar.
  • 8 ounces of butter.
  • 1/4 cup of whipping cream.
  • 2 table spoons of milk.
  • 1/4 table spoon of vanilla.
  • Optional: food coloring or icing colors.
  1. Step 1

Soften 2 sticks (8 ounces) of butter. In medium-sized mixing bowl combine butter, 16 ounces of powdered sugar, 1/4 cup of whipping cream, a dash of pure vanilla extract and 2 table-spoons of milk.

  2. Step 2

Mix with electric mixer until frosting is a creamy consistency and all lumps of butter are well blended. This makes a fairly stiff, thick frosting that is suitable for use in a pastry bag for decorating purposes. If desired, to make a thinner and slightly less sweet frosting suitable for icing a cake, you may gradually add a little more milk to this recipe until your frosting is the desired consistency.

  3. Step 3

If desired, add food coloring or Wilton icing colors to color the icing. If you will be needing more than one color, spoon out the desired amount of icing into a smaller container before adding the desired color. In the example above, this butterfly cake was decorated with Wilton icing colors in black, pink, yellow and blue. The black was used for the body. Yellow and blue were combined to make the green wings, and blue and pink were combined to make the purple accents.

Tips & Warnings
  • Like many cooks, I tend to guess at amounts rather than measuring precisely, so the above amounts are estimates. You can adjust the amounts of powdered sugar, butter and cream or milk to get the frosting the desired consistency and desired taste based on your preferences. You can also turn this into a chocolate buttercream frosting by just adding about a table spoon of cocoa to the mix.
