Step 1
Ask around to see what the expectant mom has already and doesn't. See what others are planning to buy for her. Make a list of what is already being bought, as well as what the soon-to-be mom already has for the baby. Now you can see what is already being taken care of and have a better idea of what she and the baby will still need.
-
Step 2
Ask if there is a registry. If the expectant mom has created a baby registry at a store, you can usually check it in store or online to see what she has picked out for her wish list. A baby registry is where expectant moms can choose the gifts they would like to have for their new baby. When someone buys something for her baby shower from the registry, the item should be removed so there are no duplicate gifts.
-
Step 3
Check to see if there is a large essential needed or wanted. If the expectant mom still needs a changing table, dresser, crib, play pen, stroller, or big toy you and a few others can pitch in for that one gift. If you know that the expectant mom needs one of these things you can ask a few others who have been invited to the baby shower if they would like to pitch in on a large gift together and split the expenses.
-
Step 4
Choose a personalized gift for a lasting impression. This only works if the expectant mom already knows if the baby will be a boy or a girl, and has chosen a name for the baby. Ask her if she is absolutely sure of the name before you invest in a personalized gift. Some personalized gifts include teddy bears, blankets, picture frames, plates and clothing.

Step 5
Choose a baby shower gift that reflects the mom's hobby or career -- as long as she enjoys it, otherwise she might not like the gift. If the expectant mom is a writer, for example, you could buy her baby some clothing that has something on it such as "Future Writer." Consider the sports she likes, food she loves, the job she enjoys or a hobby she is into.
