Roast Your Own Coffee Beans

Roasting your own coffee beans is a lot of fun and a great hobby. It's nice to be able to create exactly the kind of coffee you like to drink and there are many ways that you can roast your own coffee beans.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Green Beans
  • Tumbler
  • Heat source
  1. Step 1

The first step to being able to roast your own coffee beans is, of course, to buy raw beans. There're many places where you can buy raw beans. You may want to look for a local bean supplier in your own community. However, it's most likely that you'll the most successful by finding beans online.

  2. Step 2

Once you've found beans that you want to roast now you must build something to roast them in. What you'll need to do is to build a cylindrical roaster that you can use on top of the gas BBQ. Many gas barbecues are set up so that you can use the rotisserie to roast your beans. The trick with using a gas barbecue is that you have to either buy or build a container to roast the beans in. I have also seen people use hot air popcorn poppers, stovetop popcorn poppers, and even countertop rotisserie ovens. There is a great website with a lot more information about the types of coffee bean roasting options. Go to www.Sweet Marias.com.

  3. Step 3

The actual roasting of coffee beans is more art than science. The heat and the length at which you roast the beans depends on the type of bean and also on the type of roast that you prefer. You will need to experiment with this overtime. I suggest that you attempt roasting your beans at a conservative temperature and for conservative time at first. Once you gain more experience and have practiced with different types of beans you will know what works best for you.

  4. Step 4

Almost as important as the roasting process is the cooling process. Once you have finished roasting your beans is important to cool them as quickly as possible. You want to lay them out on a cookie sheet or some other wide surface so that they can get to room temperature as quickly as possible. If you leave them in a contained environment they will continue to cook and possibly burn.

  5. Step 5

Now comes the fun part... Brewing your coffee. It's highly suggested that you store your roasting coffee beans in an airtight container. Perhaps an old coffee can would be easiest way. You can also use mason jars with the seal lid or any type of container like a plastic container with lid that will keep an airtight. You probably already have a coffee bean grinder but if you don't you can buy one inexpensively at local at local supermarkets and other retail stores.
