Wash a Motorcycle Using a Motorcycle Jack
Wash a Motorcycle Using a Motorcycle Jack

Washing a bike can be made easier by using a motorcycle jack so that the wheels can spin freely. This will allow you to clean the tires more thoroughly than you can with the bike propped on the kickstand.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Motorcycle jack
  • Soap
  • Wheel cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Wash mitt
  • Hose
  • Chamois
  1. Step 1

Use your motorcycle lift to jack the bike several inches off the ground. The bike should be stable and the wheels should be able to spin freely.

  2. Step 2

Begin with your wheels. Use your wheel and tire cleaner (there are several reputable companies, Turtle Wax is one) to spray the cleaner onto your front wheel. Spray both sides of the tire with cleaner, spinning as you go. Let it sit for about a minute then scrub with sponge. Spray the cleaner off with the hose. Repeat this with the back tire.

  3. Step 3

Put soap in your bucket. Fill with warm water. Soak your motorcycle with the hose.

  4. Step 4

Use the wash mitt and the soapy water, begin washing your bike. Start at the front fairing, if applicable. You want to start at the top so gravity is working with you. You will probably want to avoid washing your windshield with the mitt. Rinse with your hose every so often as you go.

  5. Step 5

Move from the front of your bike down one side, again working from top to bottom. Pay special attention to all those nooks and crannies!

  6. Step 6

Once you've washed all the way back to the beginning, wet your chamois cloth with warm water. Wipe your bike beginning where you started washing. The same principle applies to drying your bike. Be sure to wring your chamois every so often to avoid leaving water spots.

  7. Step 7

Let your bike down off the lift. You're all done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use your sponge to wash your bike. The brake dust can scratch your paint.
  • Always be careful when using a bike lift.
  • Be sure your products can be used on motorcycle wheels and tires. Some products can make tires slick.
