Making Perfume for Kids

Making Perfume for Kids

Kids like smelling good, just like adults. The problem is that letting most kids have a bottle of liquid perfume can have messy results and sometimes overpowering scents. Since most kids don't know how to apply perfume in moderation, a solid perfume may be the solution. Not only is making perfume an inexpensive craft, but it is also one that your kids can help make. Plus, they'll love being able to carry their perfume with them where ever they go.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the oils and beeswax. Most craft stores carry an array of essential oils and beeswax. Let your child pick out their favorite scent. There are many fruit smelling essential oils like orange, strawberry, watermelon or raspberry. Two or more essential oils can be used at the same time, so experiment until you find the scent that most appeals to you and your children.

Put a little water in the small pan. Add 1 tbsp each of beeswax and jojoba oil to the glass bowl and set it in the pan; this acts as a double boiler so that when the water starts boiling it will slowly melt the beeswax without burning it. If beeswax is not available try breaking up an unscented tea candle into the bowl and melt it down. The beeswax can also be placed in a microwave safe bowl and melted in the microwave.

    • 3

Take the pan off the stove when the wax is completely melted. Use oven mitts or a cloth when taking the bowl out of the pan because it will be hot. Set it on the counter or kitchen table to finish making the solid perfume.

    • 4

Add the essential oil to the melted beeswax and jojoba oil. Stir with the straw as you pour the essential oil in. A spoon or a toothpick can be used, but the wax will start hardening on the surface of whatever you use to stir; you'll want something with little surface so not much wax is lost and can be thrown away.

    • 5

Pour the perfume mixture into a small container. Some ideas for containers are cleaned out lip balm pots, chap stick tubes or clean baby food jars. Another idea is to pour the perfume into a heart container, which can then be put on a chain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once the wax is melted and the essential oil is added, try stirring in a bit of glitter for a touch of perfume sparkle.
