From this Article you will learn how to Grow a Pineapple from a Store bought Pineapple. Growing a Pineapple is a very family friendly project that the kids will love. They will get the chance to Grow a Pineapple from the very Pineapple that they just enjoyed eating!!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pineapple
  • Shallow Bowl
  • Water
  • Miracle Grow Potting Mix
  • Gallon Size Pot
  • Good Sized Rocks
  • Sunny Window
  1. Step 1

    1. Cut the top off of the pineapple leaving about an inch of flesh.
    2. Lay it upside down on its top. Leave it like this for about a week so that any flesh that is left on will be easy to remove and so the core has time to dry

  2. Step 2

    3. Peel off some of the leaves from the bottom until you see little brown roots.
    4. Find a shallow bowl so that the leaves can rest on the sides and the core is the only thing in the water.
    5. Leave it in the water until you see several long white roots, this could take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.
Now you're ready to put your new plant in dirt.

I use Miracle Grow Potting Mix because it will feed your plant for up to 3 months so that it has plenty off time to get well established.

    1. Take a gallon size pot and put some good size rocks in the bottom so that it will have good drainage.
    2. Fill your pot with dirt and pat it down just a little. Put your plant in the dirt and cover the roots and the core, don't cover any leaves. Leave enough room at the top so that when your plant starts to grow, the leaves can grow over the pot not into the pot. Water well to get all the air out of the dirt, you may need to add a little more dirt.
    3. Set it outside in partial sun. As your plant gets more established you can set it in direct sun. You will have to bring it in in the winter if you live in a colder climate (Under 65 degrees). 9. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and spray the crown every few months with a weak organic kelp based fertilizer, such as PlanTea.

  3. Step 3

Your Pineapple will have to be 2 years old before it will produce. This is what you need to do to get it to produce a Pineapple.

    1. Put the plant in a large plastic bag with an apple, then move it to a shady spot. The apple gives off ethylene gas that will encourage the plant to bloom and set fruit.
    2. After five days, remove the plant from the bag and set it back in the sun.

Flowers should appear in a few months, followed by a small fruit. It will take the fruit about six months to mature. Now you know how to grow your own Pineapple! Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Any Rotten or Dry leaves need to be pulled off before planting.
