1
If you're working with frozen raw shrimp first thaw them in cool water. This will take about 5-10 minutes.
-
2
Peel the shell off the shrimp, with the exception of the tail. To do this, hold the shrimp by the tail in your right hand. Using your left hand grab the legs and gently peel off as much of the shell as possible.

3
Once all the shrimp are peeled you can either toss them with your favorite spice or leave them plain. Popular seasonings include Old Bay, Cajun seasoning or simple salt and pepper.
-
4
To prepare your steaming pot, put about a quart of water in the bottom of a large pot. If you have a steaming basket insert it, but be sure the water is not touching the steamer. If you do not have a steamer, you can bring the water to a boil and place a metal colander in the pot. Again, making sure the water is not touching where the shrimp will sit. Bring the water to a boil.
-
5
Once the water is boiling put the shrimp in the steamer or the colander. Place a lid on top. Let the shrimp steam for about 3 minutes or until they are pink.
-
6
Remove from the steamer and serve warm or cold with cocktail sauce.
