Ants can be a problem in the kitchen. Even if your kitchen is clean, one drop of ketchup or a soda glass in the sink can attract a lot of ants, with their uncles and cousins. Here is a great method to repell and kill them in your kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Spray bottle
  • Dr. Bronner's liquid Castille soap or any bar soap that is lying around

Instructions

Get a plastic spray bottle, and fill it with water. Add a capful of liquid soap (not detergent). You can also use bar soap, if you have some lying around. Grate a few ounces of soap, and add the shavings to a liter of water (not too much soap, or it will solidify again). Zap it in the microwave to melt the shavings. Put your soapy water in your spray bottle.

Whenever you see ants, spray them down with the soapy water. This will kill most ants (some are tougher than others). If there are ants on the dishes in the sink, spray them down. You can spray over the counters and anywhere they are making a trail.

Come back five minutes later and wipe up the water and ants. Ants are much easier to clean up when they are not moving around any more. Spray down your windowsills and doorways, or any other entrances the ants are using. Be cautious about water and soap on fine woods and furniture, but other than that, you can spray liberally since it is just soap. After you wipe up, your kitchen will be very clean and ant free.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is perfect for the kitchen, since it is dangerous to use pesticides near your food and dishes.

  • You can use your spray bottle anywhere, it is particularly good for the garden too. Soap repells or kills many insects, and is a great alternative to pesticides.
