Step 1
ASSESS THE DAMAGE.
Walk through your house and determine which room is the worst. Once you've decided what room needs it the most, you're ready to begin the process of removing the clutter and organizing your home. -
Step 2
ONE DAY AT A TIME.
Don't drag out all of the mess and end up getting frustrated and forgetting it, because the clutter will be worse if you do that. Instead, once you've determined the room that you will focus on first, look around the room and decide on one area of clutter in that particular room. For example, if you picked your child's bedroom, look around and find an area to begin working on. It doesn't need to be the worst area. Just pick a defined area, like the toy box. You'll need 2 large boxes and a few trash bags. -
Step 3
TRASH IT OR KEEP IT.
Now that you know the area you'll be working on, and you have trash bags and a big box, go through each item and determine whether it's trash, give away, or treasure. Try to choose TRASH or give away more than treasure. If you haven't used it in a year, you don't need it. If it's in good shape, put the item in a box to give away. If it's old and junky, it's trash. If you truly need or want the item, it's treasure. Go through each item in your first area of clutter. Now that you've decided what to throw away, give away, and keep, organize what you wish to keep. Clean the surface, replace the items in a systemic way, and throw out your trash bags. Take the "give away" items to Goodwill or another charity, or give away to friends who need them. -
Step 4
CHOOSE ANOTHER AREA.
Great, your home is already looking better. Now choose another area of clutter in the room and repeat the steps. Choose no more than 1 or 2 areas a day. Once you've finished the first room, choose the second most cluttered room as your next project. Take your time and don't become overwhelmed. Within a month or less time, your home will be in great shape. You'll be organized and proud of your home.
