Use a Compass Ghost Hunting
Use a Compass Ghost Hunting

We are going to look at the compass for ghost hunting. This inexpensive gadget can be added to your ghost hunting kit for less than $5.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Compass
  1. Step 1

Use only compasses with free-swinging needles. If the needle tends to get stuck pointing in one direction, it's not helpful. First you will need to know what direction North is. The compass point is affected by magnetic fields. The theory is that paranormal activity changes the magnetic field.

  2. Step 2

Learn to use the compass in a not haunted site, first. Your backyard is a good place, if there are no electrical wires nearby (underground and overhead, too).

  3. Step 3

Start by slowly walking around the investigation site. Keep the compass as flat as possible. During the investigation pay close attention to which way the needle is pointing towards. A normal reading is always North.

  4. Step 4

Possible paranormal activity is when the compass is reading the wrong direction or if it begins to spin or have erratic movement.

  5. Step 5

If you have erratic movement, stay in that location and try doing some EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) work. Remember: North NEVER changes its location. Even a slight 10-degree shift is an anomaly, if you've eliminated all other influences.

Tips & Warnings
  • The compass point is affected by magnetic fields. The theory is that paranormal activity changes the magnetic field. This can cause the needle to spin or point in the wrong direction.
  • Give it a try and see if you like using a compass. If you get erratic movement try doing some audio recording. This could lend a hand in capturing a voice on audio.
  • Never go ghost hunting alone.
  • Always get permission from the property owner.
