How to Care for Yorkies
If you are looking to adopt a furry new family member, you may be considering a Yorkshire terrier. These silky, longhaired dogs are adorably tiny and yet full of energy, affection, courage and intelligence. Because of their diminutive size, Yorkies are a good pet choice for apartment dwellers or people with small yards. They are also effective watchdogs despite their small stature. Although they tend to be sweet dogs with many positive attributes, you should learn about what it takes to care for a Yorkie before deciding to bring one home.

1
Feed your Yorkie a combination of healthful dry food and premium wet food. The dry food is important for its nutrients and beneficial to your dog's teeth. The wet food contains healthy oils that assure a shiny, nourished coat.

2
Brush and comb your Yorkie's hair every day. Spray the dog's hair lightly with a combination of conditioner and water. Use a good quality pin brush and finish with a metal comb with long teeth that will reach through the long hair to get out any tangles or knots.

3
Wipe your Yorkie's mouth after every meal. Because of their long, thick hair, bits of food can become trapped inside. Use hypoallergenic baby wipes or a dampened paper towel.
-
4
Clean your Yorkie's ears once a week or more. Use an over the counter ear cleaning solution, available from your vet or pet supply store. Squeeze just a little into the ear canal and then use your fingers to gently massage in the solution. Use cotton balls to wipe away dirt, wax and excess solution.
-
5
Keep your Yorkie's eyes clean and free of hair and mucus. Keep the hair around your dog's eyes trimmed or pulled back. Use a warm, soft washcloth to wipe away mucus and tears that may run from your dog's eyes.

Tips & Warnings
Yorkies should be bathed weekly using special shampoo, due to their long coats.
Do not use cotton swabs to clean your dog's ears. You could potentially puncture an eardrum or cause other damage.
