Don't you just love the tone Stevie Ray gets out of his guitar? You may be wondering how he gets that awesome tone. In this article I will show you how to make your guitar sound almost like Stevie Ray's.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A decent guitar, preferably an American Fender Stratocaster
  • A decent amplifier
  • Ibanez vintage overdrive pedal, or other or your amp's overdrive setting
  • Heavy strings: .11's or higher. .10's will work too just not as well
  1. Step 1

Most all SRV songs are in Eb tuning, or down a half-step. Tune your guitar down a half-step if you want to play along with the albums.

  2. Step 2

Turn your gain to 2 around o'clock.

  3. Step 3

Turn your pickup to the neck setting, tone and volume knobs up all the way.

  4. Step 4

On the equalizer, turn your bass all the way up, your middle all the way down, and your treble all the way up.

  5. Step 5

For your overdrive pedal, you are going to want your level setting in the middle, your tone set more bright than mellow or "high." Your "drive" setting should be about in the middle depending on the sound. If you have a combo overdrive/distortion pedal, you want all overdrive, no distortion.

  6. Step 6

    Rock

  7. Step 7

    Rock

Tips & Warnings
  • Stevie used incredible .13 gauge strings on his fender. So, the heavier you can go the better. I use .11's
