Roll Your Own Filtered Cigarettes

Tight economies make it so some things, like cigarettes, are too costly. With all the layoffs and 'we can't afford you, we have to let you go' happening it is actually the WORST time you could consider quitting. So, instead of 50-70$ per carton, how about 20$ for top of the line? Let's do it!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One cigarette 'shooter'
  • Box of filtered cigarette tubes
  • Loose cigarette tobacco
  • Box or pan at least 8x8"
  • Chopstick or other small dowel type item (optional)
  • Toothpick
  1. Step 1

We are going to use one of the most expensive 'domestic' brands around, American Spirit. There are many great brands out there so don't hesitate to try them.

  2. Step 2

As with the tobacco, there are many great brands of filtered tubes. I am fond of these because they are a touch wider than normal and are tough.

  3. Step 3

I like Rizla for my shooter but as with above, many good ones out there. This one tends to run less than $10 so it is a good choice for the beginner.

  4. Step 4

First you need to 'stage' your area. I like to use a 9x13" Pyrex baking pan. It gives you plenty of room to work with. Put some loose tobacco in one corner, and a handful of tubes in the other.

  5. Step 5

Next, place your tobacco loosely in the shooter. The amount will vary and you will get the hang of it with a bit of practice (it took me 2 cans to really get the hang of it).

  6. Step 6

Next you will use the tamper tool to fill the shooter space properly. press it down directly centered.

  7. Step 7

Now tamp it from the front.

  8. Step 8

Then tamp it from the back.

  9. Step 9

Do the above three steps until it looks like this.

  10. Step 10

Slide a tube on the receiver end, when you close it the tube will lock in place.

  11. Step 11

Firmly but gently, in a smooth motion, slide the shooter back until it stops.

  12. Step 12

Now slide it forward until it stops.

  13. Step 13

Open the lid and pull off your now packed cigarette, it should look like this.

  14. Step 14

Depending how you carry them (in a case they seem fine, but loose in a box they do tend to 'shed') you may want to tamp the end. I do and have no problem with tobacco leaks. This is where I find a chopstick handy.

  15. Step 15

Your end should now look like this. If you plan rough travel you might try my trick of folding the edge down.

  16. Step 16

One can of tobacco and one box of tubes should not match up. They have never done so for me. A can of this tobacco runs me about 15$ and the tube are roughly $2-2.50 and I get about 150 cigarettes out of that. They are strong and are a bit fatter so I find we often smoke a half at a time. Here is what I tend to end up with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store your full box in the fridge, they will keep better.
  • Be patient! Look at it this way, if you ruin 5 tubes out of 200 you STILL save money.
  • Practice, I can't stress that enough.
  • Tobacco IS habit forming 9thusly why it is bad to quit when you ARE already stressed). If you are not already a smoker, I highly recommend NOT starting!
  • If you are underage, then you need to be busted :D
