Step 1
Preschoolers attention spans are shorter, so having music games in between learning a new piano song keeps the learning fun. Check out my other articles to learn how to do different piano games.
-
Step 2
Encourage free play with the piano. Ask your preschooler to play whatever the want on the piano. No music, no study, just free playing. Encourage them to have a beginning, middle and end. Applaud when they finish the song.
-
Step 3
Use a teddy bear or a baby doll to help teach lessons. Have the child teach the teddy bear a new note with the flash cards and you hold the teddy bear and have it nod it's head or touch the flash card. If you are using a pointer during the lesson, have the child use a chopstick or a toy wand to point at the music and teach the teddy bear.

Step 4
If you see the preschooler moving a lot, they probably need to get up and let out some of the pent up energy. Have them take the flash cards and put them in sequence on the floor and have them point to the right cards with the toe of their shoe instead of their hands. © 2008 Pianistic

on 7/7/2009 Great advice! I'm noticing my teenage students don't have the same attention as they used to. I may need to take some of your ideas and adjust them slighty to apply to them. Thank you!
