Step 1
Make the Hamantaschen. Use this simple recipe that everyone likes.
1/2 stick pareve margarine ( for Glatt kosher use 2 sticks pareve margarine)
½ stick real butter
½ brick full fat cream cheese
All purpose flour
1 and ½ cups Granulated sugar
1 cap vanilla
1 egg
Bakers colored sugar chunks
****For Glatt kosher omit butter and cream cheese and use only margarine.
1 can poppy seed filling or use: pineapple ice cream topping, apple jelly, strawberry jam or fruit jelly.
Mix first three ingredients, sugar, vanilla and egg. Then add flour a little at a time to make a fairly stiff dough.
Roll dough out on floured board, about 1/8 inch thick. Using a glass or biscuit cutter cut out circles. Drop teaspoon of fill in center and pinch up the edges so it forms a triangle and you can see the filling. Place on butter spray cookie sheet, sprinkle with colored or bakers sugar and bake at 350-375 until golden brown.
Remove and cool. They will be firm. This is a dairy product and must be eaten 20 minutes after meat or before meat unless using Glatt recipe. -
Step 2
Costumes are a MUST. You have to put some thought into it. Then you can go and have a contest for who has the best costume. Get creative. COSPLAY web sites often have some great ideas. Awarding prizes is great.
Grogger or noise makers. The type that clap together or that go around like acreaking door are best. At certain point sin the story you have to make noise. May I suggest ear plugs for parents.
Can’t afford a costume, then plan on old fashioned party masks make a good idea in a pinch. To get you started you can enlarge this one and decorate as you like with ribbons, beads, paint, feathers etc.. -
Step 3
megillahGo online and listen to the Megillah, You have heard the old expression, the “ whole megilla” well this is the root. It’s the complete story of Esther. It’s a nice story to listen to. But if you don’t want to listen to it you can download a free copy of it.

Step 4
A pinata. You can buy an inexpensive pinata or make one even cheaper. Make a pinata from a baloon. Blow big baloon as full as you can and tie a knot so it will stay inflated.
Cover with strips of newspaper dipped in flour and water paste or diluted glue paste. Four and water paste dries faster. If you use a blow drier between layers it will dry faster.
Apply at least five layers.
After all layers are dry coat the paper with flesh tone poster paint, Then have the kids draw an image of face or haman if you want/. Otherwise decorate with bright colors!
Using a pin pop the balloon.
Cut a small hole on the upper top and fill with candy, small toys, pennies, erasers all kinds of goodies. And then tape that section closed and repaint. Knot some string so that it makes for a loop for hanging.
Have someone set it up in an open area where whacking with a stick is ok.
