When teaching the piano, children under 7 need extra attention from the piano teacher to help direct their energy and guide them through new sheet music. Here are some tips to teach a new piano song to a preschooler.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Before you begin, remind the child of the rules. Sit straight, fingers curved, etc. With preschoolers you must be repetitious.

  2. Step 2

Play the song for the child and you sing and have them sing along. They won't know the song, but they will follow you.

  3. Step 3

Point to the notes and have the child say the notes. If they hesitate, wait a few minutes and let them think it over, before you tell them what the note is.

  4. Step 4

Have the child play the song. Remind them of the rules, if you see their fingers not curving, etc. Say, the notes out loud as they play. You may see their fingers begin to flatten as they are playing the song as they are concentrating very hard on what note to play. That's okay. Wait till they play the song again to remind them.

  5. Step 5

Have the child play the song again and this time, don't say the notes. This way you can see what notes are giving them trouble and help guide them.

  6. Step 6

If the child is not too tired and doesn't need a break, you can have them play it one more time and you can sing the song as they play. Then switch off and you play the song, while they sing.© 2008 Pianistic
