Create a Family Home Budget Worksheet Using Excel

To manage your Family Budget is to organize and track your personal finances (income/expenses) in your home. You can make your own budget worksheet using a simple program from Microsoft Excel

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Home computer or Laptop
  • Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software program
  • Calculator
  • family office printer
  • paper
  1. Step 1

To create your family home budget first open your Microsoft Excel program and upload a new worksheet.

  2. Step 2

Format your columns at the top of your budget worksheet to represent months or weeks depending on the home payment schedule for your family.

  3. Step 3

Type in headings to the left of your sheet in the cells to represent each budget worksheet category.

  4. Step 4

On your worksheet, make your first budget category Total Gross Family Income or Earnings and your last cell Net Family Income Available. Break the remaining home budget categories into headings like Home, Auto, taxes, investments, savings plans, living expenses, and miscellaneous.

  5. Step 5

Use different fonts, letter sizes, and bold or underline functions to highlight your budget categories. You can also adjust your cell widths to accommodate your worksheet heading lengths.

  6. Step 6

Next you can change your numeric format to currency and choose the number of decimal places. You can also format the way your negative currency is shown on your home budget worksheet. You can choose a - sign, or () around, or even have them represented in red.

  7. Step 7

Last use your sum function to add all cells across or down depending on your home budget worksheet format, and have your total tabulated at the bottom under your Net Family Income Available category.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the format function to format your negative currency as red to stand out on your home budget worksheet
  • Format your currency without decimals and round expenses up to the nearest dollar and round family income categories down
  • Use the auto sum function on your excel program to add columns faster
