Step 1
Insomnia can last a day or two or even months in some people. Insomnia has different faces, and is not defined by any one criteria it doesn’t matter how many hours you sleep or how quickly you fall asleep. It all depends on the person. It’s all about the quality of sleep and how rested you feel when you wake up. If you still feel sleepy when you wake up and feel like you need a nap, you may be experiencing symptoms of insomnia. Take a look at your sleeping habits and your life in general, and see if there is a reason for your insomnia.
-
Step 2
There are different things that can be causing your insomnia. Foods and drinks that you eat during the day can affect your sleep at night. Caffeine, smoking or alcohol can cause poor sleep at night. Prescription medications can interfere with sleep, even medications for sleep disorders can have a rebound effects and cause insomnia; they have to be watched carefully for side effects.
-
Step 3
Watch the lighting in your room. You should have a dark and quiet room to sleep in and may need shades, which will help for a better night’s sleep. Watch your activities during the daytime, and especially before bedtime. Activities such as watching violent TV shows, loud music, or vigorous exercise can cause lack of sleep. Stress, your job, or family conflict can cause insomnia. Anything that stimulates your mind can cause you to have insomnia symptoms.
-
Step 4
There are many natural insomnia cures that you can learn to do on your own. Some things that might help with insomnia include mind games like counting sheep or counting or spelling backwards. Deep breathing exercises may help to concentrate on sleep. Muscle relaxation techniques. First you tense up all the muscles, and then you release and relax your muscles.
-
Step 5
Imagine images in your mind to help relax; things that make you happy. Guided relaxation techniques that require a script to follow for relaxation, special exercises that make you unwind your thoughts and calm down so you can sleep. Meditation teaches you relaxation by breathing, for calmness. Stress and anger can dwell on your mind causing insomnia causes. Releasing your anger positively will help chronic insomnia. Having positive influences, exercise, and a positive outlook on life will influence insomnia treatment.
