How to Make Salt Scrubs

Salt scrubs are great for exfoliating, but buying a salt scrub from a store or having one done at a spa can wash away any extra cash in your wallet. By making your own salt scrubs, you can get the same experience for a fraction of the price and you can even personalize your salt scrub with your favorite scents and oils. Salt scrubs are easy to make and are also great gifts for friends and family. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup salt (sea salt, kosher salt or table salt)
  • Carrier oil, such as sweet almond or olive oil
  • Fragrance or essential oils
  • Bottle or jar with lid or cap (for gift-giving)

Instructions

    • 1

Pour your salt into a mixing bowl. You can use any type of salt you like, from exotic colored sea salt to plain table salt. Table salt has finer grains and is gentler on the skin. Sea salt and kosher salt have bigger crystals and are closer in texture to the salt used in a spa treatment.

Add the carrier oil. Start with a small amount and continue until the mix reaches your desired consistency (a thick paste is good, but you may want more or less oil depending on how moisturizing you want the mix to be). You can use a variety of carrier oils (see Resources below for a list of some of the more common carrier oils).

If you want a scented salt scrub, add three to five drops of fragrance or essential oil.

    • 4

Use your salt scrub and don't forget to rinse your skin and shower well after you finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using salt scrubs near a cut or right after shaving--the salt can get into nicks and cuts and sting. If you're giving your salt scrub as a gift, remember that it's homemade--which means it's preservative-free, too. Seal the container well and tell the recipient to use the scrub within a few months and keep it out of direct sunlight.
