Removing the outer layer of an ostrich eggshell to make it smooth

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ostrich eggshell, vinegar, The Works, Muratic Acid, Heavy duty gloves, large glass bowls, masks, soap, beeswax or parafin wax, candle, matches, piece of foam, chopstick or /BBQ skewer
  1. Step 1

    Part One is Using Vinegar

Use soap and water and use a toothbrush to clean the shell very good. There are a few different ways to take the outer layer off and I'll tell you about a few of them.

  2. Step 2

Take a piece of beeswax or paraffin and soften it and place it in the blow hole to seal it. Light a candle and use the dripping wax to go around the beeswax to put a second seal on it.

  3. Step 3

the easiest way to clean the outer layer of the ostrich eggshell is by using plain old white vinegar. Take a large bowl and fill partially with vinegar and place the eggshell into the vinegar. roll it gently around the dish for about twenty minutes . (Be sure and wear gloves) Take it out o the vinegar and scrub lightly with a toothbrush under running water. If all the outer layer is not gone, place in fresh vinegar for about five minutes more, and repeat the rolling process, then place under running water again and use the toothbrush to clean the shell until it looks smooth.

  4. Step 4

Dry the ostrich eggshell with a towel or paper towels and place on a piece of foam approximately 4x4. Tale a BBQ skewer or chopstick and run it through the bottom of the foam up into the eggshell and let totally dry before trying to carve or decorate.
