How to Become a Firefighter in AZ thumbnail
Firefighters in Arizona can be faced with massive wildfires.

Firefighting is a highly sought-after job in America, as it's a challenging and exciting job in which you can help people and save both lives and property. But with the right tools, persistence and a little bit of luck, you can become a firefighter in Arizona.

Instructions

    • 1

Graduate high school or get your GED. Get a driver's license for the state you are applying in. You will also need your EMT certification for most departments -- it can usually be attained in one semester at a community college. These are basic requirements for any firefighting department.

    • 2

Do a ride-along with as many departments as you can. Call the department ahead of time to schedule, as policies regarding ride-alongs vary by department. Each department has its own culture, and each firefighter or group of firefighters with whom you ride along will be able to give you insight into what it takes to be a firefighter and what you need to do to prepare yourself for that specific department. Don't forget to bring cash for chow, and nobody ever thought less of a ride-along for bringing ice cream to share!

    • 3

Join a gym and make sure you are physically capable of performing the job duties -- firefighting is extremely taxing on the body. You will be running into burning buildings carrying heavy tools, breaking down doors and dragging people to safety.

    • 4

Prepare for your interview, which will make or break you. The written and physical agility tests are important, but the interview is where you are evaluated face to face. While you are doing your ride-alongs, pick the brains of the firefighters. Ask them if they will give you a mock interview. Remember, they got hired, so they gave the right answers at some point. Their input will be invaluable.

    • 5

Apply for jobs in any department for which you'd consider working. When you fill out the application, make sure it is neat and legible, or you can apply online. In either case, proofread your application before turning it in or hitting "submit" -- or ask someone else to proof it if spelling and grammar aren't your strong points.

    • 6

Pass the entrance test. It will either be a video or written test, but either way, it will be multiple choice. There are usually math, reading comprehension and mechanical aptitude sections on the test. Books are available at most bookstores to help you prepare for this test.

    • 7

Pass the physical agility test. Your time at the gym will be useful here.

    • 8

Get a suit and wear it to your interview. Relax. Be yourself. Show the panel that you are a person with whom they wouldn't mind spending 24 hours at a time. Don't try to come across as their friend -- you haven't earned that right yet. Just try to convey that you are professional, easy to be around and hardworking. The best way to do this is to come prepared.
