Roasting or grilling pork isn't the only way to create barbecue pulled pork. In the colder months, put your crockpot to use. Start with a simple recipe then doctor it up with liquid smoke, chile peppers, onions and other flavors as you prefer. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 to 3 lbs. Pork shoulder
  • 1 Bottle barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. Water
  • Hot pads
  • 2 Forks
  • Buns

Instructions

    • 1

      Place the pork roast in the slow cooker. Add water.

      Cover the crock pot with the lid, and place on the high setting for five to six hours.

      Uncover the crock pot. Shred the pork into small bite-sized pieces with two forks.

      Add a full bottle of barbecue sauce (14 to 18 oz.), and onion powder and salt to the pulled pork.

      Stir well, replace the lid, and cook for an additional hour on the high setting.

      Let the pork cool, and serve on buns.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cook the pork shoulder one day and mix in the barbecue sauce, salt and onion powder. But store in the fridge overnight. Cook it the additional hour the following day; this lets the flavors meld more.

  • Add cayenne pepper, green and red bell peppers, paprika, or grilled onions when you add the barbecue sauce.
