How to Sew Lined Curtains
Lined curtains give a window a finished, clean look. They are not much harder to sew than unlined curtains since they are simply two finished curtains sewn together. If you can sew a pillow sham, you can sew lined curtains with these instructions.
Things You'll Need
- Fabric (coordinating colors)
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Iron

1
Measure the window to decide how big you want the curtains. Add an extra 2 inches to the measurement all the way around to allow for hems and seams. Add another 4 inches for the rod pocket at the top of the curtain.
-
2
Cut the two pieces of fabric to the same size.
-
-
3
Hem both pieces of fabric by folding the edge of the fabric 1/2-inch and then folding it 1/2-inch again. Pin the hem down and sew with a running stitch. Take out the pins.
-
4
Line up the fabric's corners and pin the two pieces of fabric together with the printed sides facing each other.
-
5
Sew the fabric together on three sides with the top of the curtain left open. Your curtain should now look like a giant pillowcase.
-
6
Turn the fabric right-side out so that the print is on the outside and the hems and seams are on the inside.
-
7
Sew the top of the curtain shut by running a seam down the matched-up hem seams.
-
8
Fold 4 inches of the fabric at the top of the curtain over so that it is folded onto the backside of the curtain. Iron the fold until it has a sharp crease.
-
9
Sew the bottom of the fold to the curtain to create a pocket for the hanging rod. You can iron the rest of the curtain for a clean, crisp look.

Tips & Warnings
Fold over more than 4 inches of fabric at the top of the curtain for a deeper rod pocket. Just make sure to add an allowance in your measurements so the curtain doesn't end up too short.
Make sure that your seams are straight for the cleanest look.
