Before the babysitter arrives and you step out to ring in the new year, celebrate with your kids. Let them share in the traditions of New Year's Eve while creating some new family traditions of your own.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sparkling Grape Juice
  • Noise Makers
  • Party Hats
  • A stepping stone kit
  • A height chart
  • A scrapbook or photo album

Help your child understand how much changes in a year. Each New Year's Eve, use a stepping stone kit to display their hand and/or footprint. Not only do they create a unique feature in your yard (or wherever you decide to display them), they give your child a sense of how much they have changed over the past year.

Another way to accomplish this is a special height chart that you use every New Year's Eve. If you don't have one, you can make one with a piece of lumber, such as a 1"x"6. Let your child help you decorate it, then mark your child's height on it.

Or, try something simple like taking a piece of cardstock and tracing your child's hand on it each year in a different color ink. Be creative! There are countless ways to measure your child's growth.

  2. Step 2
Create a scrapbook with your child that summarizes the past year

Collect some of your favorite family photos from the past year. Have your child help you put them in a photo album or scrapbook. Ask your child to describe the photo (what you were doing in the photo, how your child felt that day) and write down your child's response in the album. You have just captured the past year as seen through your child's eyes.

  3. Step 3

Choose a time, such as 6:00pm, and start the countdown! Put on your party hats, make some noise with your noise makers, and ring in the new year a little early. Don't forget to drink sparkling grape juice out of fancy glasses.
