Things You'll Need:
- Goals
- Paper
- Pen or pencil
- Notebook
-
Step 1
One of the most important aspect to making attainable New Year's resolutions is to make realistic goals/resolutions. People often wax nostalgic and go for the gold when they know they will never, ever, even try to get close to the resolution. So this step is all about being a realist.
-
Step 2
Sit down with a pen and paper and brainstorm all the ideas you have for making changes in your life. Cross off any that you know you will not even attempt even though they sound good. Prioritize the ones you have left from the most likely to do, to the least likely. Then rate each of those from 1-5 (5 being high) for the impact it will have on your life.
-
Step 3
Select no more than three of those goals. At least one should be in the top five for likeliness to be completed. One other should have a great impact on your life when you accomplish the goal.
-
Step 4
Create a "Resolution" notebook. Write each resolution on a separate piece of paper in the notebook. On that same sheet of paper, write at least three steps you will take to achieve that goal and the time frame in which you will complete it. Additionally, write down what your reward will be when you have reached and achieved your resolution.
-
Step 5
At least every other week, check your notebook and capture your progress. Acknowledge when you have made advancement. Plan how to get ahead again when you have set backs.
-
Step 6
Lastly, honor your reward when you have been successful. This will inspire you to complete your other resolutions. Should you complete all your resolutions prior to year end, select a new one and continue the process.

on 1/1/2009 I agree with this article. Also, you are right when you said: Honor your reward, when you have been successful. Thanks Happy New Years 5*

on 12/31/2008 These are well thought out tips. Your suggestion about writing out the steps for each goal is one that I make to my clients as well. It always helps to have one or two goals so that you don't get overwhelmed.
