Step 1
naruto (made of white fish)First, learn how to write the main character of the show, Naruto Uzumaki. His name is うずまきナルトin Japanese. In Japanese, the last name comes first. So the first part "うずまき" is "uzumaki". う is (u), ず is (zu), ま is (ma) and き is (ki). These are Hiragana characters.
"ナルト" is "naruto" and they are Katakana characters. ナ is (na), ル is (ru), ト(to). So what is "naruto"? "naruto" is made of white fish and it is often in "ramen" soup in Japan (especially eastern part of Japan). Sadly, I heard that many ramen shops these days do not put a naruto in ramen soup. I learned that the name "naruto" (made of white fish) came from a tidal whirlpool in the Naruto strait in Japan. But I don't have further knowledge of when, why and who started to put a naruto in ramen soup in Japan and what is the relationship between this whirlpool and white fish naruto. The picture of naruto is shown here. As you see in the picture, in the middle of a naruto, there is a pink squiggly line looks like a vortex. "uzumaki" means "vortex" or "whirling" in Japanese. As you know, ramen is Naruto's favorite food! -
Step 2
uchiwaSecond, learn how to write Sasuke Uchiha. His name is written as うちはサスケ in Japanese. The first three letters are Hiragana and they are Sasuke's last name, "Uchiha". う is (u), ち is (chi) and は is (ha). The last three letters are his first name, Sasuke, in Katakana. サ is (sa) ス is (su) and ケ is (ke). "Sarutobi Sasuke" was the famous Japanese hero ninja character in a novel before World War I. Some say he was not real but others argue he was based on a real person. I am sure (Uchiha) Sasuke's name comes from this Sarutobi Sasuke. うちわ (or うちは) is a Japanese fan like shown in the picture. Though, unlike Sasuke's last name, the fan in the picture is pronounced "uchiwa". Note that this is not a "folding" type of the fan as you probably often see. The back of Uchiha Sasuke's clothes depicts the picture of "uchiwa", a Japanese fan, and... ah... no, it is not a ping-pong paddle which you have thought all along…

Step 3
Next, how about learning Sakura's name. Her name is written 春野サクラ in Japanese. The first two characters are in Kanji. 春 is "haru" and 野 is "no". 春 means "spring" (as in four seasons). 野 is "field. サクラ is Katakana. サ is "sa", ク is "ku" and ラ is "ra". Sakura means "cherry blossom" in Japanese. I assume that is why her hair is pink color just like cherry blossom.

Step 4
One of Naruto's favorite people is Iruka sensei. His name is written asうみのイルカ in Japanese. The first three characters are Hiragana. う is (u), み is (mi) and の is (no). The last three letters are Katakana. イ is "i", ル is "ru" and カ is "ka". イルカ means "dolphin" in Japanese and "umi" means "sea". "no" is often interpreted as "of". So his name is "dolphin of sea".
-
Step 5
Lastly, let's learn how to write Kakashi sensei's name. His name is はたけカカシ. The first three letters are Hiragana. は is "ha", た is "ta" and け is "ke". "hatake" means "field" in Japanese. The last three letters are his first name, "kakashi". カ is (ka) and シ is (shi). Kakashi means "scarecrow" in Japanese. So his name means "scarecrow (of) field". In this article, I pointed that both はたけ (hatake) and 野 (no) are "field". はたけ often means a cultivated field; the field where people can grow vegetables like a farm field. 野 can be a wild field.
