Repair Toilet Fill Valve
Repair Toilet Fill Valve

There are 2 valves in your toilet tank , one is the fill valve or BALLCOCK VALVE, the other is a flush valve or FLAPPER VALVE . Both are easy to replace. In this article I'm going to tell you how to replace the fill valve or BALLCOCK

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go behind the toilet & turn off the water. There should be a valve on the wall. If there isn't a valve on the wall . You will have to shut off the water to your whole house
Shut off the water & disconnect the water line where it attaches to the bottom of the toilet

  2. Step 2

With the water shut off , FLUSH the toilet to empty the tank. If you have a wet/dry vacuum. Vacuum out the little bit of water that is left in the tank after you flush the toilet.

If the tank starts to refill, you have not got the water supply shut off.

  3. Step 3

With the water shut off & the tank empty. Remove the nut on the bottom of the toilet that holds the fill valve on. Have a few towels handy because you may still get a little water on the floor

  4. Step 4

Take the old fill valve to your local hardware store or home improvement store. Show them the fill valve you just removed & ask them for a new one. The new one may not look exactly like the old one , but that's ok. There are a few different styles of fill valves & they all work pretty much the same. Some have a long arm with a ball at the end , some have a cylinder shape float that slides up & down around the valve tower.

  5. Step 5

Once you have the new fill valve , the process of installing it is the reverse of how it came off. There will be instructions on the box that will tell you everything you need to know about that fill valve

  6. Step 6

Here is how to install. Place new fill valve in the hole, Make sure you have the rubber gaskets installed right. Put on the bottom gasket & screw on the nut & tighten it. Get it nice & snug, But don't over tighten it. Reconnect the water supply line & turn on the water.

  7. Step 7

If it leaks you may need to tighten the nut some more or you may have the gaskets on wrong.

  8. Step 8

If it does not leak you have installed it right. when the tank is full , Flush it & see if it works good. you can adjust how high the water fills in the tank. Look on the box & it will tell you how to adjust that fill valve.
