Step 1
Use a rewards system to discipline children. Each child receives credit (e.g., stickers) for behaving. Whenever a child misbehaves, one credit is removed. A set number of earned credits (e.g., 10 stickers) can be rewarded with something of value to the child. This could be dessert, small toys, or t.v.
-
Step 2
Before removing credits, explain why you're punishing the child. Detail exactly what was done wrong, why it was bad, and the reasons it shouldn't happen again. Children are less likely to repeat their mistakes once they've been given an explanation they can understand. "Because I said so" can't work all the time.
-
Step 3
Never give in to whining. It only teaches one thing: "Whimper or scream enough and you can have whatever you want!" When you remove credits because of the child's behavior, be clear that "no" means "no" every single time. Part of child discipline is sticking to each punishment, even through tantrums.
-
Step 4
Do not criticize other parents for spanking their children. It's a perfectly normal and effective way to discipline children, though not the right choice for every family. Respect the decisions of other parents, even if you don't agree with their choices. You never know when you might want to adopt their methods!
