Okay, so the recent Holiday season has made me think about the subject of the "uncomfortable family Holiday gatherings". How do you avoid the awkward conversation with members of the family you only see once or twice a year? How can one possibly appear to be comfortable? Well, I don't have all the answers. I do have some tips that I'll share in this article. Not everybody even has this problem.. maybe there are some who really enjoy seeing the random cousin or Uncle that they wouldn't really recognize on the street if they passed them in the middle of July. I, however, don't feel entirely comfortable in those situations. Maybe these tips will help you out next Holiday season.

Things You'll Need:

  • a strategy
  • a set of topics and conversation starters that you'll take into the gathering
  • great stories
  • a companion
  1. Step 1

First, you need a strategy that you plan days before the "gathering".

  2. Step 2

Think about some set topics of conversation that you can take in with you. Basic stuff.. Ask about jobs, family, life, sports (ie How about them Cowboys?), movies, etc. -- But, you gotta think about who your audience is. Who are these family members? Traditional people? Traditional, yet open minded? Close minded? These are all things you factor in to the decision you make on what topics to bring up.

  3. Step 3

Bringing a companion always helps. A girlfriend with me always seems to ease all the tension at family gatherings. This is not a bad idea. You need an ally going into this strange territory.

  4. Step 4

Be social, make conversation. It'll be easier if you do that rather than be silent and die a slow death.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear light tinted sunglasses.. Your eyes can say a lot..especially when your rude great uncle or great aunt or cousin says something so absurd or politically incorrect that it makes you want to do karate.
  • If any of my family reads this.. I have 100% fun at all of our gatherings. This is just an article for people who may struggle with odd, family situations and Holiday gatherings. I, however, love all of our gatherings. See ya next Christmas.
