Salmon fishing is a popular sport that is best done between May and August. Early morning and late afternoon is the best time for catching salmon, but it can easily turn into an all day event. Some of the best places to fish for salmon are deep lakes and fast-moving streams where they go to feed. Salmon are known to be evasive and can put up a good fight if caught, so a strong fishing line and a sturdy rod are necessary.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sturdy fishing rod
  • Strong line
  • Bait
  1. Step 1

Using a large steel rod and sturdy line such as one that is made of silk and hair combined, apply bait to your hook.

  2. Step 2

Use worms or small fish for bait early in the salmon fishing season (May and June). In the later months (July and August) it may be better to use a fly, because this time the water levels have dropped and the salmon are closer to the surface.

  3. Step 3

Cast the line into the water, and let out about 50 feet of line.

  4. Step 4

Move the line around the water in a slow arc, occasionally making a jerking motion. This will catch the attention of any nearby salmon.

  5. Step 5

Connect with the salmon, allowing it to take the line. Tighten the line and keep it taut.

  6. Step 6

Play with the salmon. Slowly, by a few degrees at a time, reel it in releasing some line every now and then to tire the fish out. Be sure to move downstream so the salmon is not only fighting you but the current as well.

  7. Step 7

Strike the salmon with a blunt object on the head and drain out the blood to ensure the best freshness.
