Surprise your little one with an Elmo Pinata for his/her birthday party! Believe it or not, Elmo is pretty simple to make and the whole project will only cost a few dollars to complete!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 1 Cup Water
  • Red Crepe Paper
  • Black Crepe Paper
  • White Crepe Paper
  • 1 large balloon
  • 3 small balloons
  • Newspaper, torn into 1 inch strips
  1. Step 1

Mix together flour and water until it forms a smooth paste. This will be the glue that holds your Elmo Pinata together.

  2. Step 2

Blow up the large balloon to about 12 inches across. You will be molding the balloon sideways with the tied end on one side to form Elmo's head.

  3. Step 3

Brush the entire balloon with glue paste and place newspaper strips onto the balloon in layers until 4 layers thick all the way around the balloon.

  4. Step 4

Blow up each of the 3 small balloons to form Elmo's nose and eyes. The balloons should be about 2 inches wide. Glue the eyes onto the top of Elmo's head and he nose onto the front. Cover with glue paste and place newspaper strips around each of the small balloons.

  5. Step 5

Allow to dry for 24 hours.

  6. Step 6

After the 24 hour drying period is up, mix up another batch of the glue paste and brush over the entire mold.

  7. Step 7

Cover Elmo's head with red crepe paper. Each of Elmo's eyes should be covered with white crepe paper. Then place a small circle of black crepe paper over the center of each eye to form Elmo's pupils. Cover the nose with black crepe paper. Repeat this process until the entire mold is covered and no newspaper can be seen.

  8. Step 8

Allow your Elmo Pinata to dry for 3 days, then cut a small square into the back of Elmo's head, towards the top. Also poke two small holes right behind Elmo's eyes and string a ribbon through in order to hang the pinata. Allow to dry for an additional 3-4 days.

  9. Step 9

Fill with Candy and give each child the opportunity to beat it open to win the prizes!

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also fill a pinata with small toys rather than candy.
