Step 1
What used to be known as youth hostels are now cheap accommodation for everyone. Hostel prices can range from $13 to over $40 a night depending on where you stay, and if you have a private room or a shared one. Hostels are pretty much the standard for cheap accommodation anywhere in the world.
-
Step 2
If you are planning an extended visit to another country, cheap accommodation can be had by doing a home stay with a family. When you get to the city you are staying in, you can ask the tourist center if any families have registered with them for home stays. This is a popular option for people who are attending language schools overseas as well.
-
Step 3
Find out where the campgrounds are where you are staying and bring a small tent. This is cheap accommodation no matter where you are! There are places in Mexico where you can set up a tent for a dollar or two.
-
Step 4
Couchsurfing is the ultimate cheap accommodation! Just register at couchsurfing.com or place2stay.net and find a match. Of course, it's nice if you offer cheap accommodation to someone else as well by putting your couch on the list!
-
Step 5
If you are a Quaker, you can travel and stay with other Quakers. It is possible that you are a member of a group that offers a similar network of cheap accommodation. Check into this.
-
Step 6
You can trade houses with someone in another city or country. This is not cheap accommodation, this is FREE accommodation! Advertise on Craigslist or sign up with an agency. The agencies normally deal with upscale properties.
-
Step 7
For cheap accommodation at a hotel, ask if there are any discounts. If you are a member of AAA, a teacher's union or another organization that gives a discount, be sure to mention it...after you've gotten a great room rate!
