Cuban Sandwich Recipes

Once you try this Cuban sandwich recipe you will wonder how you have lived without it. The Cuban sandwich or medianoche is Cuba's version of a ham and cheese sandwich. There are some slight variations in the Cuban sandwich recipes but one thing is certain, a Cuban never puts mayonnaise on it. The two most important things to this Cuban sandwich recipe are the roasted pork and properly pressing the sandwich.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 loaf of fresh Cuban bread, can substitute French bread but NOT a baguette
  • softened butter
  • 1/2 pound of sliced ham, preferably a little sweet
  • 1/2 pound of sliced roasted pork
  • 1/2 pound of sliced Swiss cheese
  • sliced dill pickles
  • yellow mustard (optional)
  1. Step 1

Preheat your sandwich press or a heavy skillet. If you don't have a press, use a heavy skillet to cook in and another to press the sandwich with. Some people use an aluminum foil covered brick to weigh down the sandwich. Pressing well is essential to the Cuban sandwich recipe.

  2. Step 2

Split the loaf of bread in half lengthwise and butter both sides.

  3. Step 3

Build your sandwich in this order to be authentic to the Cuban sandwich recipe, pickles, roasted pork, ham, then cheese. You may add mustard at this point if you like. Close the sandwich and cut into 2 or 3 generous sandwiches.

  4. Step 4

Either butter or use spray oil on your press or skillet and add the sandwiches. Press them well. They are done when the cheese is melted and the bread is compressed and golden, slightly hard. You will have to flip it to cook the other side if using a skillet. The original Cuban sandwich recipe calls for your finished product to be about 1/3 of it's original thickness.
