Teach Your Dog to Lie Down
Teach Your Dog to Lie Down

Teach your dog to lie down: A dog can easily be taught this command especially if it has already learned the command "sit." All dogs learn at their own rate and certain breeds of dogs are harder to train than others. Teaching your dog the command "down" will help you control your dog and eventually help teach your dog new tricks. If you don't know how to train your dog to sit, this will help:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • dog
  • treats
  • patience
  1. Step 1

Get a dog treat and take your dog into a quiet area. It is not necessary to be in a quiet area with just your dog, but it would be a lot easier to train in a space with little distraction.

  2. Step 2

Stand in front of your dog.

  3. Step 3

Ask the dog to sit. (If your dog doesn't know how to sit go to my other eHow articles to see an easy way to train your dog to sit).

  4. Step 4

Then take the treat and put it right in front of their nose. Then slowly lower the treat to the floor while saying "Down" in a commanding voice. The dog will instinctively follow the treat to the floor and lay down. If the dog does not go "down" then the treat may be too far away from the dog.

  5. Step 5

PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE! When the dog does it right, give him/her the treat and lots of petting. Use an excited voice.

  6. Step 6

    REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tips & Warnings
  • the tone of your voice is important: praise should be excited and happy, while giving a command should be point blank.
