This simple soapmaking recipe doesn't use lye. The process takes under an hour.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soap bars
  • Herbs, essential oils, extracts
  • Olive oil
  1. Step 1

You will need 8 parts shredded soap to 1 part olive oil. A bar of soap, grated, equals about one cup of soap. If you want to start small and experiment with aromas, use two bars of soap and 1/4 cup of olive oil. Use a vegetable grater or a food processor to shred the soap. Place the shredded soap in a heat resistant pot.

  2. Step 2

If you're using dried aromatics like balsam or lavendar, place about 1 tablespoon in a heat-safe pot for a two bar recipe. Boil the olive oil and pour over the dried aromatics. Let steep for as long as you want - at least 5 minutes. If you're using an extract like vanilla or peppermint, add a few drops to the boiling oil and adjust until the aroma is to your liking.

  3. Step 3

Return the oil mixture and aromatics to a boil.

  4. Step 4

Pour the hot oil over the shredded soap, mix well, and let sit for about half an hour. Wait until the mixture is cool enough to handle, but not solid.

  5. Step 5

Form the soap into whatever shape you like, or use soap molds. Let sit for several days before using.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different aromas. Use baking extracts.
  • Try combining aromas.
  • Working with boiling oil is dangerous. Be very careful!
