How to Measure for your Vinyl Replacement Windows
Vinyl replacement windows are usually made to order to fit the opening. Because of this, it is important to get proper measurements when ordering your windows. Measuring for your vinyl replacement windows does not require removing the trim on the inside to get the rough opening size. You take measurements from the existing window in several places to find the proper ordering size. When measuring for replacement windows, never assume that all similar windows on your home are the same size. Measure each window individually to ensure you order the correct size for all the windows you are replacing.

1
Open the bottom sash fully. Find the sill stop on the bottom window sill. The sill stop is the portion of molding that the bottom sash butts up to when the sash is closed. When measuring height, you want to measure from the side of the stop where the bottom window sill angles down.
-
2
Measure from the inside top right of the window opening to the right bottom sill in front of the stop with a tape measure. Write the first measurement down, and measure the height from the center of the window opening and the left side of the window opening. Write all three measurements down. Use the shortest measurement as your ordering height.

Place the end of the tape measure on the inside right bottom of the window frame jamb. Ensure that you measure in the jamb where the sashes ride. Measure to the opposite side of the window frame jamb. Write the measurement down. Measure between the jambs directly under the raised bottom sash.

4
Lower the bottom sash, and lower the upper sash if possible. If you currently have single-hung windows with a stationary upper sash, measure from the jamb stops on each side of the jambs at the top. Measure where the stops meet the window frame. Take the shortest of the three measurements as your ordering width.

Tips & Warnings
One optional measurement is to measure the angle of the bottom sill. Angle measurement tools are available at home improvement centers. Measure the sill angle at both ends and in the center of the sill.
